 Post #1 Topic Interests:

I am a senior with just one more semester left after this fall before I graduate here at Utah Tech. I have grown to love technical writing and I also realize how much I have to learn about professional and technical writing. I am excited to learn and grow in this class.

On behalf of topics for a research proposal, I have had a difficult time coming up with different ideas. Something that does interest me is the arrangement and format of words in document design and its impact on rhetoric. What makes the information of an infographic memorable or forgettable? It is just an idea I have that has always stood out to me in my other classes dealing with technical writing.

  1. Hi Taela,

I really love the idea of studying the rhetoric of Infographics because of its relevance, timeliness, and ubiquity, not to mention the topic itself is so rife with possibilities. Should you choose to pursue this subject for research, I'd say right now it is approved! =))

At any rate, start plowing through some scholarly articles to distill your interest further (I'll also introduce the Lit. Review writing assignment #1 next week for this purpose). Once you're ready to start your research design -- whether rhetorical analysis, qualitative, or other types of research method -- let me know and maybe we can set a brief conference to talk about it, ok? Am here.... =))

Blog #4 Pans for Revision

I need to better refine the outline of my research proposal so that it will be easier for me to compose all the components. I then plan on developing that part of my proposal and making the necessary changes for the literary review. I had a lot of comments on organization and sentence restructure that I can apply in my writing. I also want to add more extensive synthesis to my paragraphs to help better utilize my sources in my writing. Then after all of that, I can put those things together! I plan on meeting with Dr. B to get some advice!

Blog #3 Research Gap

My research on infographics and the effect of design principles on a reader's retention has a lot of great sources that provided information on the efficiency of infographics and elements of graphic design. In one of the studies I read through from Clemson, they had performed an experiment entirely on the principle of repetition and color and memory of users. They mentioned the gap in being able to really place how each user responds to those design principles and how that may interfere with accurate measurement of remembering the information they obtained. I think it may be hard to determine other influences of the skill of memory that depends on the individual because there are different levels of retention from person to person.
